What an Entrepreneur in the Music Business Looks Like

The process of designing and launching a marketing strategy can be daunting. However there are some things that you should try to remember somewhere between trying to map it out on paper and giving up prematurely. One is that you are an entrepreneur and in addition to thinking of your music as a product, you should think of yourself as a business pioneer of sorts. This will help you to retain excitement and momentum, sustaining your energy and optimism in the face of adversity. Some of things that go along with are remembering that you don’t know and can’t do everything yourself and being DIY doesn’t mean you should take on all tasks alone. Assemble a team of ‘specialists’ who can and want to help and you’ll find that things get done faster and more effectively. You also need to be as active as possible. Release music and play shows as often as you can rather than waiting until you’re invited onto the Warped Tour or you can afford time in a top-notch studio which can wind up costing more than you budgeted for anyway. Always be learning from each move you make and think about how to integrate the different aspects of your career (i.e., touring, recording, social media presence, etc.).
