While writing
Facebook and Twitter posts can be a breeze and seem like they should be
effective given the popularity of the services, the most effective marketing
strategy of all is networking. The fact is that if you’re good at it, or at the
very least relentless, sooner or later new opportunities will be presenting
themselves constantly. Although it helps to be charismatic and carry some name
recognition of your own, the trick is to just keep at it and introduce yourself
to as many people as possible. This means other bands (of course),
photographers, people shooting videos, anyone working for the other bands or
the club, and so on. Even the lowliest sound guy and the dirtiest dive bar
might have a recording studio in his basement and looking for a pet project. One thing you need to remember is that you
should never open a conversation by asking for a favor. Try to make sure you
offer them something first. If it’s another band; even helping them load their
van back up could help.
They say
(about pretty much every industry) “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.”
Your best bet as an aspiring rock star is to know everybody.
