Playing gigs
is constantly named as a reliable supplement for the general lack of a market
for music that isn’t free. The problem posed by this would-be solution is that
most bands don’t get paid for their gigs and sometimes even have to fork over
some of their own cash just to grace the stage (unless they can sell enough
advanced tickets…which they almost never can). Selling merch can help but in
most cases doesn’t make up for much, especially considering that it is in no
way a ‘new’ revenue stream. The best answer to this problem is not exactly a
quick fix but will likely make you more in the long run than almost any
singular performance would. Collecting
email addresses at all costs will give you a continuous string of opportunities
to generate revenue. If you want to get aggressive with it (and you should),
try offering a free download in exchange an email address. This will help you
stick in the minds of anyone who catches any given show, alert them to upcoming
shows, new merch, new albums or downloads available. They might not want to buy
anything from you after only hearing you once, but give yourself a chance to
grow on them and you will likely win your way onto their PayPal account
statements eventually.
