'Lost In The Supermarket'(ing)

Unless you’re chronically pragmatic and refreshingly down to earth – which, let’s face it, doesn’t describe anyone in a band – you’re probably wondering why some bands who seem far inferior to yours are making the big time while you’re still making sandwiches at a 24-hour drive thru. The answer is marketing. You probably thought of marketing as something a record label does after they hand you a briefcase full of money to hold you over until they comeback with more briefcases full of money. While something like may happen (figuratively speaking) once you do get a record deal, for now its up to you.

In order to gain any kind of traction, you need to find away to get people to listen to your music. Even if you’re giving your music away, you still need to convince people to listen. You may be thinking of sample stations/trays at the supermarket, where you/most people will give something a try even if they know they won’t by it. But it’s not like that. There are a few reasons for this but perhaps the most underlying one is that while people may have described your band as great, awesome, amazing, and so forth, I can say with absolute certainty that no one has ever described it as delicious.
