It’s undeniable that the fairly recent development of small-time philanthropy, or ‘crowd-funding’, through website like Kickstarter and IndieGoGo are doing wonders for the treacherous world of struggling artists. Just visit the websites and take a look at how many aspiring musicians are getting a helping hand, often from complete strangers. And it gets even better; you have options.
There are at least four sites where you can declare your rock and roll dreams, cross your fingers, sit back and (hopefully) watch the money roll in. But just about any time you have options, there is a right choice and a wrong choice. Sometimes several. For example, Kickstarter is the most heavily trafficked but this also means more competition. Also, as you may already know, if you don’t meet your fundraising goal, you get nothing. But not all the sites are like that. In the end, it doesn’t matter what’s worked for Amanda Palmer and others. You have to decide which is right for your band.
